MACA Board Meeting Minutes

May 4, 2008

McDonald's, 343 Cochituate Road, Framingham, MA

The meeting was called to order at 3:21 PM. In attendance: Maryanne Reilly, Brian Lafferty, Brian Mottershead, George Mirijanian, Robert Messenger, Donna Alarie, Stephen Dann, Kenneth Ballou.

MOTION 8-158: Lafferty/Reilly, the minutes of the March 16, 2008, meeting as distributed are approved. Passed without dissent.

Election commission report: As of the meeting, 92 ballots have been received. The election commission will ask the webmaster to post a reminder of the ballot return deadline on the MACA web site.

Mr. Messenger presented the treasurer's report.

MOTION 8-159: Mirijanian/Lafferty, accept the treasurer's report. Passed without dissent.

Mr. Messenger presented the membership secretary's report. This report may be found at the end of these minutes as an appendix.

LMCF report: Mr. Dann stated that he is preparing a report covering the past year's LMCF activity. There was informal discussion of possible LMCF activity with regard to library chess programs.

Mr. Ballou presented the tournament committee report. The Massachusetts G/60 championship had a turnout of 72 players. The prize fund was increased by $150 with the addition of prizes in the Under 2000 and under 1400 sections.

President Reilly presented the scholastic committee report. The BB&N Scholastic Open had a reasonably successful turnout considering possible conflicts with spring sports and the fact that the tournament is a new addition to the MACA scholastic schedule. The 2008 Fall Foliage Festival will be held at Sage School on Sunday, September 28, 2008.

MOTION 8-160: Messenger/Ballou, to spend up to $500 each for the Denker and Polgar representatives from Massachusetts. Passed without dissent.

Mr. Mirijanian presented the publications report. The next Chess Horizons deadline is June 1. Chess Horizons is looking for reporters for MACA events.

MOTION 8-161: Alarie/Messenger, Brian Lafferty assumes the duties of Chess Horizons advertising manager. Passed without dissent.

OLD BUSINESS

The board took up motion 8-151, which had been postponed from the February 24, 2008, meeting.

(MOTION 8-151: Ballou/Messenger, MACA will support the Boston Blitz for the U.S. Chess League 2008 season with a contribution of $500.)

Motion 8-151 was amended and replaced with the following text:

MOTION 8-151b: Ballou/Lafferty, MACA will purchase $500 worth of advertising from the Boston Blitz. Passed without dissent.

NEW BUSINESS

MOTION 8-162: Dann/Lafferty, Award John Curdo a plaque commemorating the 60th anniversary of Mr. Curdo's first Massachusetts Open victory.

Passed without dissent.

The next MACA board meeting will be held Saturday, June 14, at a site to be determined.

MOTION 8-163: Messenger/Mirijanian, to adjourn. Passed without dissent.

The meeting adjourned at 5:06 PM.
